Testing the Use of Egocentric Interactive Techniques in Immersive Virtual Environments

چکیده
Navigation, object selection and manipulation in virtual environments are based on interaction methods or techniques driven by conventional or special devices. There are a number of techniques and devices available for the development of applications involving interaction in immersive worlds, and to choose the most suitable one for a given situation is a difficult task. This paper reports the evaluation of selection and manipulation techniques in an immersive environment based on a chess game. The techniques evaluated in the experiment were the virtual hand, associated to a common mouse or data glove, and the ray-casting, used with a data glove. We propose some hypotheses and discuss experimental results.

Immersive virtual environments (VEs) offer interactive, real-time visualization capabilities for engineers, architects, and scientists. This paper presents VirtualSAP, an immersive VE application allowing users to assess building structures and their response to various environmental conditions through an interactive designbuild-test-redesign cycle. Virtual-SAP has three distinct user interface...
متن کاملEgocentric Object Manipulation in Virtual Environments: Empirical Evaluation of Interaction Techniques
The acceptance of virtual environment (VE) technology requires scrupulous optimization of the most basic interactions in order to maximize user performance and provide efficient and enjoyable virtual interfaces. Motivated by insufficient understanding of the human factors design implications of interaction techniques and tools for virtual interfaces, this paper presents results of a formal stud...
متن کاملPerceived Egocentric Distances in Real, Image-Based, and Traditional Virtual Environments
In virtual environments, perceived egocentric distances are consistently underestimated when compared to the same distance judgments in the real world. The research presented in this paper explores two possible causes for the compressed distance perception in virtual environments: (1) real-time computer graphics rendering, and (2) immersive display technology. Our results show there is a signif...

In virtual environments, perceived egocentric distances are often underestimated when compared to the same distance judgments in the real world. The research presented in this paper explores two possible causes for this reduced distance perception in virtual environments: (1) real-time computer graphics rendering, and (2) immersive display technology. Our experiment compared egocentric distance...
متن کاملInvestigating the Impact of Interactive Immersive Virtual Reality Environments in Enhancing Task Performance in Online Engineering Design Activities
The objective of this paper is to test the hypothesis that immersive virtual reality environments such as those achievable through the head-mounted displays, enhance task performance in online engineering design activities. In this paper, task performance is measured by the time to complete a given engineering activity. Over the last decade, a wide range of virtual reality applications have bee...
